Abstract
The Caatinga is a large dry forest ecosystem that covers about 11% of the Brazilian territory. Botanically, it is considered the only uniquely Brazilian biome. It was the agronomist and ecologist from Pernambuco João Vasconcelos Sobrinho (1908-1989) who first proved that the biological heritage of the Caatinga, in addition to being very rich, is unique on the planet . In his honor, the date of April 28 is dedicated to the National Day of the Caatinga, since 2003.
