Abstract

This paper examines the theoretical aspects of the EMTP simulation methodology and its relation with the state-space approach. A mathematical proof of the equivalence between the discrete-time generalised state-space formulation and the EMTP nodal formulation is given in this paper. The presence of chatter in EMTP simulations of switching circuits is explained in terms of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the generalised state-space model. The concepts are illustrated using simple examples.
