Abstract
Diabetes has become one of the major epidemics of this century. Prolonged hyperglycemia can lead to peripheral vascular disease and capillary complications. Therefore, it is critical to monitor the blood supply of arterioles in the extremities of diabetic patients for prompt treatment. In this study, we investigate the potential of photoacoustic tomography (PAT) for monitoring hemodynamic changes in finger vessels. We used PAT to visualize vascular perfusion of healthy volunteers and diabetic patient. The results showed a significant difference in hemodynamics between the two groups, confirming the potential of PAT in monitoring peripheral vascular dysfunction in diabetes patients.
