Abstract

The labor market is segregated by gender. As a result, most of the professions are masculine or feminine. With regard to engineering, the masculine construction of the profession has been formed around values, practices and norms, responding to specific logic (Berner, 2002). In order to delve into the understanding the labor segregation, the objective of this research has been to analyze the social-professional representation of the engineering from a gender perspective. Students in the field of engineering have been asked about their social representations of engineering through the free association technique. 192 student responses were valid (n = 65 women and n = 127 men). The responses have been analyzed through prototype and complex analyzes. In conclusion, it has been observed that social-professional has gendered implications. This is mainly detected when referring to content related to high time requirements, as well as the hegemony of the technical aspect of the profession.
