Abstract

We examine the feasibility of applying Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) in hvpersonic flows, in connection wth the longhot facility of the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics The minimum detectable particle size is determined through scattering calculations, in association with realistic laser power and film sensitivity figures Impedimenta pertinent to contamination of the flow are discussed and hints about technically tangible means of mitigating their consequences are presented
