Abstract
This article discusses the etymology of lexical doublets in English, approaches of scholars to the development of lexical doublets, their division into semantic groups, their use in languages, in discourse and their functional and semantic aspects. Semantic grouping of lexical doublets from different languages has been explored with examples.
