Comparison of steel and cast iron Yankee cylinders

Abstract

This paper compares steel and cast iron Yankees, explaining the advantages and disadvantages of both, the differences in their manufacture, and the properties of the materials used. Using a special cylinder as an example, the article points out the differences in terms of stresses and fatigue behavior. The surface temperature distribution and some of the factors that influence it also are discussed. Finally, some economic aspects are highlighted. Although the steel Yankee has some minor disadvantages, the comparison ultimately favors the steel Yankee.
