Expert systems and the Pentagon: a case study in integration

Abstract

Since its formation, the Advanced Technology Branch of the US Air Force has taken a four-pronged approach toward advocating expert system use, involving extensive training, development of expert systems, research and acquisition of development tools, and marketing the technology to users. In the past five years, the Advanced Technology Branch has developed and delivered over a dozen expert systems to its customers, resulting in millions of dollar in cost savings. A study is made of each of the four elements of success, and how they contributed to the acceptance and use of expert systems by customers.<>
