Start-up survival from an institutional and cultural approach

Abstract

Entrepreneurship is understood as the phenomenon in which some individuals are able to take advantage of the opportunities that the market presents at a given time, and which is in turn influenced by the social and cultural context where it develops. With this, the objective of this research is to analyze the survival rate of start-ups in the Valencian Community in Spain, taking into account the cultural context in which they originated, and the institutions established within that context in terms of promoting innovation and entrepreneurship. Formal and informal institutions, as well as Hofstede’s cultural dimensions of long-term orientation and uncertainty avoidance, are relevant when determining the survival rate of these types of companies. To carry out this study, we will perform an analysis using the fsQCA technique, which allows us to achieve the same outcome, through different combinations of conditions.
