Abstract

This paper compares the performance characteristics of a leaky bucket with a bursty traffic allocation and specification approach for a number of different scenarios in packet voice and video services. The scenarios include varying the peak bit rate, mean burst duration, mean silence period, burstiness, etc. over nominal values based on a Markov modulated deterministic process (MMDP) model of packet voice and video services. The study investigates the effectiveness of the bursty traffic allocation and specification method on mean and burst policing in comparison with the leaky bucket. The work compares and contrasts the results produced in previous studies using analytical and simulation techniques.<>
