Abstract
US WEST is examining alternatives and taking steps to modernize its electromechanical switching network economically. This paper describes the use of digital switches in Host/Remote cluster configurations as a means to bring digital technology to rural areas, which form a large percentage of US WEST's territory. It focuses on the need to improve the economics of switch replacement by developing global modernization plans and establishing new business relationships with switch vendors.
