What Can "Streeties" Teach us About Companion Dogs?

Abstract

For most of human history, and indeed in much of the world today, dogs are not subjected to anywhere near as much restriction of movement as they are in the global North. This article argues that looking at how free-roaming dogs lie now, as well as how companion dogs were historically treated, suggests that the highly restrictive lives companion dogs live now may not represent the best welfare for them.
