Abstract

Summary Geothermal energy is normally considered as renewable energy often related to sustainability and environmental friendliness. However, this energy has environmental impacts and geological risks, which will potentially cause social resistance. In this work, we show some of the most significant issues on social acceptance of three established geothermal power plants in Mexico. Fieldwork mainly through interviews and questioners were applied to inhabitants and stakeholders of three geothermal power plants, resulting that the communication between developers and inhabitants is not working as expected. In all sites, the interviewed persons expressed a lack of communication or even a lack of knowledge with respect to the geothermal energy that is taking place in their surroundings. No direct involvement with the geothermal resource is reported. Strong efforts on social acceptance have to be made if the goal is to balance social needs, economic interests, and environmental importance.
