Abstract

A device for the amplification and generation of the unguided TM01 gaussian mode of radiation by int eraction of a beam of electrons with the longitudinal electric field of the mode is proposed. Such a device requires that the average electron velocity be greater than the phase velocity of the radiation. Methods for achieving a reduction in the phase velocity of a millimeter wave mode in an open structure are discussed.
