UGLISH: THE VARIETY OF ENGLISH IN UGANDA

Abstract

This article describes the main features of the English variety, which called Uglish and widely used in Uganda. The text of this article sets out the causes of this appearance and formation. Particular attention is paid to the process of influence of local languages on the formation of the main features of the Ugandan version of the English language, called Uglish: although there are currently 41 local languages in Uganda with varying degrees of preservation, Uglish, based on English grammar, rightfully occupies a special place among them. The authors examine in detail the main distinctive features of Uglish, which include both the processes taking place at the lexical level (in particular - calculus, changing the meaning of words, the creation of neologisms, etc.), and deviations from grammatical norms. In addition, the authors identified and described the words and expressions from the dialect of East Africa, which was included in the Oxford Advanced Learner's dictionary. It is shown that Uglish plays a key role in the life of the population of Uganda.
