Abstract
gathering data on provincial California agriculture, especially of a statistical nature, in the mission documents and in Bancroft Library, and in visiting the missions for copies of printed books on agriculture, many items were also gathered on the libraries in the province and on their conditions in 1942. The first libraries in California were those of the missions, but the first books to reach the land arrived long before 1769.
