British Islands: An Obsession of British Composers

Abstract

This chapter focuses on three British composers, Judith Weir, John Ireland and Andrew Hugill, whose imaginations have been stimulated by particular British islands that they visited.The work of these composers demonstrates something of a trend among British composers who seem to share a desire to visit and create real and imagined island worlds of secrets and adventures. The chapter is part of a book examining the culture of island music.
