Abstract
Adults with mental retardation living in the community are marrying and having children. Many are experiencing significant problems in their role as parents. Legal, professional and programmatic supports for some adults lag behind need. This article reviews legal and ethical issues surrounding this growing population. The experience of a model pilot parenting program is presented. Finally, recommendations for future efforts in this area are presented.
