Abstract
Acute respiratory infection (ARI) is a respiratory infection that causes disruption of normal respiratory activities. Amoxicillin is the antibiotic of first choice that is generally given to patients with ARI. Compliance in the use of antibiotics for less than five days will determine the success of therapy so that the frequency of drug use also affects patient compliance in taking medication. Granule mucoadhesive amoxicillin trihydrate formula is designed with the addition of chitosan polymer is expected to keep the granule in the stomach longer, so as to reduce the frequency of taking the drug. Granule mucoadhesive amoxicillin trihydrate formula with the addition of chitosan polymer is formulated by wet granulation method. The evaluation results showed an increase in the concentration of chitosan in the formula indicating a longer drug release profile, in formula 6 with 40% chitosan concentration, it could maintain drug release by 41% for 6 hours of testing. Drug release kinetics from formulas 1, 3, 4, and 5 followed higuchi release kinetics, formula 2 followed zero-order release kinetics and formula 6 followed first-order release kinetics.
