Regiones de Jalisco en el sector pecuario ¿Éxito de mercado o supervivencia en autoconsumo?

Abstract

Jalisco is a very important state in poultry and farming leading other states with 13.9% of total national production. Even bigger is its participation in the markets for eggs and milk. Both these products are scale intensive and large production capacity consolidates their natural competitive leadership. Regions within the state develop certain specialization advantages, but Lagos de Moreno is by far the most important and diversified over poultry and cattle (milk). This region has accumulated scale and agglomeration external economies over the years, going beyond the originally based resource advantages in eggs and milk. Public policy has to take into account these regional disparities, recognizing Lagos and La Barca as “best practices” in the consolidation of competitive clusters that may show the road for other regions still trailing behind. Some of these are potential competitive achievers if policy is rightly applied.
