Despite the prevalence and detrimental impact of such behavior, existing knowledge regarding the psychological factors causing such behavior is scarce. This study investigates the impact of tourists’ perceptions of residents, through the lens of social stereotypes, on the manifestation of disrespectful behavior. Two quantitative survey studies, with sample sizes of 308 and 303, respectively, assess the tripartite connection between tourists’ stereotyped perception of residents, affective reactions toward the destination, and moral disengagement on a range of tourist misbehavior. The results of the study suggest that tourists’ stereotypical views of locals influence affective reactions in response to the destination. Tourists’ positive affective responses are negatively associated with moral disengagement, whereas negative emotions about the destination are likely to increase moral disengagement, the degree of which is moderated by perceived power.
