Sensology: Sensory Approaches to Middle English Literature and Culture

Abstract

The following forum contributes to the ongoing project of the study of the senses as embodied cultural constructions, and not factors limited to physiology or psychology, while it also underscores the vital role medieval studies plays in this developing field of research. Broadly, it continues to account for how cultural and historical conditions impact not only theoretical understandings of the senses, but, indeed, the very experience of sensing and how we make sense of our senses. The collection foregrounds the theoretical, political, material, and affective vectors of sensory studies. Each essay in the forum offers a new direction for or a new perspective on the study of the senses in medieval England.
