Abstract
While the dream of AI independently diagnosing and treating patients remains distant, a wealth of “operational AI” tools are ready to be harnessed today to streamline daily tasks like literature searches, meeting organization, and chronic disease management, freeing up valuable time for patient care. To pave the way for responsible integration, the author identified seven AI tools ripe for immediate implementation: (1) streamlined patient encounters, (2) automated chronic disease management, (3) personalized medical literature summaries, (4) enhanced clinical decision-making, (5) bedside image interpretation, (6) simplified quality improvement initiatives, and (7) streamlined research projects. Healthcare systems, however, must prepare for this AI influx. Physicians must have a decisive voice in shaping AI’s role in healthcare, while the tech industry must ensure transparency and ethical development.
