Abstract

Nurse leaders are empowering nurses to own and engage in their professional practice through professional governance (PG). Moving beyond structures, nurse leaders can assess and intentionally cultivate specific behaviors that underpin the effectiveness of PG. Stratified by the PG attributes of professional obligation, collateral relationships, and decision-making, this article summarizes a literature review that reveals promising practices for leaders to consider.
