This review focuses on the recent developments of discrete SCO clusters and cluster-based SCO coordination polymers. The synthesis, structural characters, SCO behaviors and other function are systematically analyzed for the representative SCO clusters. Abstract

Spin crossover (SCO) complexes are classic magnetic bistable materials with various promising potential applications, such as data storage, displays, switches, actuators and sensors. SCO clusters possess intriguing spin state topologies and provide a good platform to study multi-step SCO behavior and quantum cellular automata. This review focuses on the recent developments of discrete SCO clusters and cluster-based SCO coordination polymers. The synthesis, structural characters, SCO behaviors and other function are systematically analyzed for the representative SCO clusters. Their design principles and synthetic strategies are also summarized, which will help to design multifunctional discrete SCO clusters and cluster-based metal-organic frameworks.
