Magnetic tape, hard disk drives, and NAND flash memory constitute the tiered storage system, also known as the storage pyramid. This review will cover the recent advancements and prospects of these technologies, explore the shifting dynamics of their interaction, and examine the evolving use cases in the artificial intelligence (AI) field. Additionally, it will briefly address the challenges faced by alternative storage technologies such as optical data storage and DNA data storage.
