FGM/C is also a concern in the United States (U.S.). Approximately 513,000 girls and women living in the U.S. are at risk for FGM/C or its consequences, representing a 4-fold increase within a decade. FGM/C places victims at risk for significant physical and psychological trauma and also results in a substantial cost to society. Studies indicate that healthcare professionals, including nurses and advanced practice registered nurses, report a lack of knowledge and comfort related to the identification and clinical management of FGM/C. It is critical that all healthcare professionals, including pediatric nurse practitioners (PNP), possess a thorough understanding of FGM/C and intervene appropriately.
