Abstract

Addressing climate change challenges would require a resilient, sustainable and flexible energy system. One promising approach is the integrated electricity hydrogen market (IEHM). Concerning IEHM, hydrogen's unique ability to store renewable electricity to balance energy systems makes it crucial in the global energy transition. This short communication paper explores the major challenges in developing IEHM e.g. economic viability, infrastructure development, regulatory gaps and public perception. It also highlights transformative opportunities, such as decentralized energy hubs, sector coupling, and advanced storage technologies, which could reform the way we produce, store and trade energy in a market. Various case studies are explored on the design, operation and planning which provides strong evidence on effectiveness of integrated electricity and green hydrogen system. Finally, this paper provides discussion on future research scopes of IEHM.
