Besides the use of diuretics and the presence of peripheral edema, no definite etiologic factors could be found. The underlying pathophysiology of muscle cramps in patients with chronic liver disease remains obscure. A high incidence (64%) of muscle cramps was found in 112 cirrhotic patients, as compared with 17% in 169 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) negative healthy persons, 8% in 13 asymptomatic HBsAg carriers, 8% in 12 patients with acute hepatitis, and 28% in 25 patients with chronic hepatitis.
