Identification and correlation of tephras from the Plio-Pleistocene Shobudani Group, Kinokawa River, southwest Japan 日本西南部木川河上新世-更新世Shobudani群tephras的鉴定与对比

The abundances of 58 elements in volcanic glass shards from tephra samples of the Shobudani Group along the Kinokawa River, Japan, were analyzed using laser ablationinductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). The age of the Bodaitouge tephra near the Negoro Fault was estimated by fission-track (FT) dating, combined with U-Pb dating by LA-ICP-MS. The element patterns of the Gojo 4 and Shobudani 1 tephras are generally consistent with those of the Shishimuta-Pink and Ebisutouge-Fukuda tephras, respectively. Those of the Bodaitouge and Shin’ike tephras are similar to that of the Aira-Tn (AT) tephra. However, the age of the Bodaitouge tephra sample estimated by FT and U-Pb dating is 1.6-1.3 Ma, which is much older than the age of AT. The stratigraphic sequence of the Shin’ike tephra also suggests that it should be older than AT. However, in addition to the element abundances, incompletely hydrated volcanic glasses and the refractive index of coexisting ferrosilite suggest that the studied Shin’ike tephra sample is AT itself. The Shin’ike tephra may have been derived from a younger layer unconformably covering the Shobudani Group. The element pattern of the Nagayagawa tephra is similar to that of the Kikai-Akahoya rather than AT.

Recent progress in tephra studies in Japan and overseas 日本及海外麻风研究的最新进展

This paper aims to review the current situa-tion of tephra studies in Japan and overseas, focusing on methods of identification, dating, applications in palaeoclimatology, and develop-ment of archives of standard tephra samples. The author refers to recent intercomparison of tephrochronology laboratories with EPMA data on the geochemistry of volcanic glasses and developments notably in LA-ICP-MS that are revolutionizing the analysis of tephras. For determination of eruption ages of tephras, recent dating methods ranging from radiometric methods to age modeling tools such as ice-core-based age dating, together with palaeoclimato-logical studies are reviewed. In particular, the author overviews recent studies reporting detec-tions of intercontinentally distributed tephras identified in the Greenland ice core and related issues.

Recent developments in luminescence dating and potential future applications to Japanese sediments 发光测年的最新进展及其在日本沉积物中的潜在应用前景

The developments in luminescence dating methods, especially regarding feldspar dating techniques and rock surface and burial dating, over the past decade are summarized. Post-IR IRSL (pRIR) and pulsed IRSL methods for feldspar have been developed to reduce anomalous fading (athermal loss of signals). The pRIR signal at higher stimulation temperatures is generally more stable (fades less) ; however, the signal is difficult to bleach, which is problematic for water-lain sediments. The pulsed IRSL signal has both advantages, being athermally stable and quickly bleachable. Newly developed methods for measur-ing surface exposure and burial ages for rock surfaces and gravels are also introduced.

Prehistory and Quaternary Research 史前与第四纪研究

Prehistory and Quaternary Research are comprehensive, interdisciplinary sciences that study specific time periods. It is extremely important for prehistory to cooperate with Quaternary research because one of its major tasks is to understand the ancient environment that served as the stage for human lives. On the other hand, the Quaternary period, formerly called the Anthropogene, today basically refers to the same period of time as when the Homo genus evolved. An increasing number of animal and plant remains are being excavated at archaeological sites from the Holocene, and environmental archaeology research on this period, which actively uses the analyses of various natural sciences while aiming to elucidate human activities and the ancient environment that served as their stage, is flourishing. On the other hand, it is also necessary to make clear the influence upon human activities of environmental events. When doing so, first it is necessary to examine the temporal relationship between human activities and environmental events. Chronology, connecting them, plays a major role in this.
