This research involved the impact of the implementation of task-based language teaching (TBLT) in Pakistani university classrooms. The study analyzed the effects of TBLT on learning four basic English language skills: listening speaking, reading, and writing. A case study was designed to evaluate the effects of TBLT on learning language skills at the university level. Pre-test and post-test were conducted to analyze the differences between experimental and controlled groups of students. T-test and ANOVA were applied by using Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) 2.0. to analyze the quantitative data. Integration of four language skills while conducting the tasks, excited the student interest, and resulted in better outcomes. Students improved their listening, reading, and writing skills more significantly as compared to speaking skills. The results were quite similar in both control and experimental groups with minor differences in speaking skills. The implementation of TBLT in language classrooms at the university level addressed the fundamental needs of the students and nurtured a conducive environment for learning language skills with understanding.

The research explored the gender stereotypical representation in curriculum and how the institutions of conventional depiction blemished the actual image and roles of both the sexes (female and male). For this purpose, Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) through the three-dimensional model of Norman Fairclough was applied to analyze the relationship between powerful (dominating, controlling) and powerless (feeble, submissive) social groups. The present research explored identities from Punjab Textbook Board (PTB) textbooks of the middle/elementary level to identify and comprehend gender ideology. The study focused on the textual aspects that contribute to the construction of conventional images and stereotypical behavior regarding gender ideology in children at their fledgling stage of life. The research concluded that females were disregarded and excluded from the textbooks and the textbooks portrayed a diminished image of women; whereas, the males were shown as authoritative and dominating in all the socially prestigious fields like, working and earning. The present study, thus, maintained that domination and power had gone with the male members of the society; whereas, the females were publicized as feeble and submissive, working and serving at home, and maintaining their domestic and conjugal images in the textbooks. Moreover, the research recommended the revision of educational policies, curriculum, and textbooks to impart a balanced worldview to children so that socially and emotionally balanced individuals may be developed through education.

The experience of the pandemic has given a new flavor to online learning and teaching to the whole world. So, after the pandemic, the learners equally welcome classrooms which are the mixture of physical and online learning. This concept is called phygital classrooms. This term is gaining popularity recently. The current study emphasizes investigating the efficacy of phygital English language classrooms in Pakistan. The population of this study was Grade 12 learners of Pakistan. These learners were studying English as their compulsory subject. The sample size is 100 students. Following the empirical research method, two groups were formed. The experimental group used phygital classrooms as their independent variable whereas the control group used face-to-face learning (conventional mode) as their independent variable. The results of the English language (as the subject) are investigated as the dependent variable. Pre- and post-test assessment technique have been used. The results revealed no significant difference in the scores of pre-tests. On the other hand, the post-results show that there were significant differences in the performance of both groups. It clearly reflects that the experimental group performed much better than the control one. This exhibits the efficacy of phygital classrooms in the Pakistani context.

Online media has become a huge strategy for the tremendous extent of information, it spread in all occupations, including publicizing, and news-projecting, and that is only the start. This use of change is a direct result of some novel features, for instance, adaptability, free speech, and insight. Thus, a layperson is always subjected to being exposed to illegitimate “news”. Hence, the need to explore this phenomenon from the textual and linguistic perspective arose. This paper aims to investigate how “fake news” is generated linguistically and which textual features are employed by the “fake news” to make them look legitimate. The data was extracted from the report “The Indian Chronicles” – which is a source of certified counterfeit news. A systemic functional language approach is applied, where for exploration of textual features; a small corpus of fake news is compiled and tagged and through the software UAM, textual features are extracted and identified. Results have displayed, that fake news operates via centralizing participants: inanimate authority material the most, the strategy of manipulation, persuasion was most recurring, and so was foregrounding of inanimate material authority and lastly application of UAM to apply SFL concludes that the socio-cultural perspective of war and hatred in general, is the cause of this generation of fake news.

The research study intended to explore whether there is any relationship between work-family interference and family-work interference. This quantitative research adopted correlational research and the cross-sectional survey was used to collect the data. Teachers at the University of Education Lahore made up the study's population. Carlson's work-family conflict scale was disseminated among the instructors using the census sampling technique. Before collecting the data, permission was taken. Through pilot testing, the validity and reliability of the instrument were insured. The researcher applied descriptive as well as inferential statistics to analyze the data. The ethics of research were observed. Teachers reported more work interfering with family than family interfering with work. Work-family conflict and family-work conflict were shown to have a strong association. There was a significant difference in WIF and FIW based on marital status, but no difference in WIF and FIW based on gender, qualification, age, or the number of children was observed.

The win of Donald Trump in the 45th Presidential American Elections has perverted the World’s political views. This study focuses on the analysis of News Discourse presented in the reporting of Donald Trump’s victory by the two Pakistani News channels-PTV and Geo News. The study employs Bednarek and Caple’s (2017) Discursive News Values Analysis (DNVA) which investigates how news values are constructed through linguistic devices; therefore, empowering judgments into shared news and adding linguistic focus to the news studies. Results reveal the use of news values such as Consonance, Eliteness, Impact, Negativity/Positivity, Personalization, Proximity, Superlatives, Timeliness, and Unexpectedness in the data sets; residing with variation in the ‘preferred’ norms specific to the organization. Moreover, the results highlighted the larger contribution of Consonance, Eliteness, Negativity, Proximity, and Superlatives in comparison with other ones. The findings also reveal Positivity in news discourse, while the impact of the event seemed to be highlighted.

Discourse analysis is a broad term for the study of the ways in which language is used by people, both in written texts and spoken contexts. It is "the study of real language use, by real speakers in real situations," wrote Teun A. van Dijk in the "Handbook of Discourse Analysis, Vol. 4 (2001)." This study expounds upon the “Discourse Analysis of earthly and ethereal oscillations in Happy Birthday Wanda June by Kurt Vonnegut.”. This study is significant because it explores how the exposition of temporal distortions in Vonnegut’s play (1971) offers a panoramic view of life against the non-linear structure of the play. It also reveals why the impacts of socio-political and historic-religious figures on the fabrication of vice/virtue relationships among the human race are important to focus on in this research. It explores the ordeals that thwart the afterlife notions on the principle of poetic justice. The purpose of this study is to explore (I) the dichotomy between the playful life of Iscariot, Hitler, and other minor characters in heaven, and (II) the victimized existence of Penelope on earth due to the sudden resurrection of her husband (Harold Ryan) after eight years from the rainforests of Amazon. Discourse Analysis has been applied as a research tool. The conceptual framework of James Paul Gee’s (1999) “six buildings tasks” (pg:104) have been used, which helped us to evaluate the language used by the author to build up his narrative. Basing on Gee’s theory this study finds the absolute connectedness of the mortal characters bracketed by futile frustrations and the immortals waiting upon more menace to radically ravish them for their sports. This paper has further implications for future researchers to analyze other literary texts by Kurt Vonnegut to unveil various aspects of geospatial distinctions by applying the post-modern theories.

The current study aims at investigating the downfall of Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus and his intellectualism. For the said purpose, a play by Christopher Marlowe named “Dr. Faustus” was selected. The study textually and qualitatively analyzes the text The Tragical History of Dr. Faustus by Christopher Marlowe. Faustus’ character in Marlowe’s play is an embodiment of his atheistic views. Faustus’ free will leads to his damnation which then becomes a pinnacle reason for his downfall. Faustus’ thirst for intellectual power beyond the limitations of his reason becomes his damning hamartia. In this way, Faustus mocks his own intellectualism in front of the world.

This study aimed at highlighting the concept of panopticism in Arundhati Roy’s novel The Ministry of Utmost Happiness. The novel explored the maltreatment with marginalized Kashmiri people by Indian military institutions in the name of search operations. The novel also investigated the surveillance techniques used by Indian military agencies in Kashmir which increase the weight of oppression caused by violent attacks on innocent voiceless people. In this study, these surveillance strategies had been observed under the lens of the concept of Panopticon presented in the work Discipline and Punish (1977) by Michael Foucault. Panopticon is an idea, given by Jeremy Bentham, of a jail architectured in a way to ensure constant watch on the prisoners around the clock. The importance of the concept of panopticism could not be ignored, as the so-called Indian institutions continued surveillance of Kashmiri people.

The present research article aimed to deconstruct the metanarrative of Jihadism by analyzing the novel The Runaways (2018) by Fatima Bhutto through the lens of postmodern theory. Fatima Bhutto in her novel tried to present that Jihadism is a false accusation against Muslims by West media to target a particular religious group for political gains. Present research applied the postmodern concept of 'illegitimacy of totalizing narratives' by Jean-Francois Lyotard and Baudrillard's concept of ‘Hyper-reality' to inquire how it was not Islamic extremism that provoked characters to join the jihad movement but rather alienation, rejection, and social injustice which turned them against the world. Moreover, Freud's concept of 'displacement' was also taken to understand the motives behind joining the jihad movement. This research article tried to conclude that jihad was a biased metanarrative which is constructed through different postmodern strategies which had no bending to mainstream Islam and was a stigma to Muslims identity in general.

Fatima Bhutto in her novel tried to present that Jihadism is a false accusation against Muslims by West media to target a particular religious group for political gains. Present research applied the postmodern concept of 'illegitimacy of totalizing narratives' by Jean-Francois Lyotard and Baudrillard's concept of ‘Hyper-reality' to inquire how it was not Islamic extremism that provoked characters to join the jihad movement but rather alienation, rejection, and social injustice which turned them against the world. Moreover, Freud's concept of 'displacement' was also taken to understand the motives behind joining the jihad movement. This research article tried to conclude that jihad was a biased metanarrative which is constructed through different postmodern strategies which had no bending to mainstream Islam and was a stigma to Muslims identity in general.","PeriodicalId":127188,"journal":{"name":"Journal of English Language, Literature and Education","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122969639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
