[paper in French] In 2005, Evo Morales became president of the Bolivian Republic, renowned Plurinational State in 2009. At the same time, he continued being the union leader of the Tropic Cochabamba coca leaf producers. Since his first presidential election, Evo Morales has started a coca leaf revaluation policy that provokes some diplomatic problems: his double status makes him appear closer to the “cocaleros” than to the objectives of international policy on drug. However, these vision of the reform cut down the issues around the coca leaf in Bolivia, which is not only an illegal but also a legal good. This article will focus on the national conflicts around the coca leaf reform that correspond to sector’s issues and more generally to Evo Morales government’s rural policy design.

[paper in French] The objective of this paper is to understand some limits of the innovation process to encourage consumption. We are interested in the fresh fruit and vegetable products, through the tomato case. We aim to estimate the impact on consumption of two new products, introduced in the market in the mid 90’. First we check that these products do belong to the tomato market. Then we show that they have no strong effect on consumer’s global consumption of tomato, even if they have got significant market shares. This is related to the weak differentiation of the new varieties which leads to “products cannibalization”, where traditional products are replaced by new ones, without global market enlargement.

An analytical framework is proposed for analysis of environmental good production by farmers in the case of price uncertainty. Environmental good production contracted by means of agri-environmental agreements is treated as a riskless option in the farmer’s production activities portfolio. It is shown that agri-environmental agreements aiming at biodiversity competing with beef production are likely to increase management intensity on the non-enrolled land, and that the effect of the payments for these agreements on the number of hectares enrolled is ambiguous. It is also demonstrated that an increase in the output price variability and/or a decrease in the level of decoupled subsidies will induce an increase (decrease) in the area enrolled in agreements aiming at biodiversity competing with (complementary to) beef production. The obtained results are illustrated by means of efficient frontiers generated using mathematical programming farm level models of suckler cow farms in Monts du Cantal, in France.

(article en francais) Numerous works in industrial organization and ecology of organizations have raised recently the question of the link between age and mortality of an organization. The paper tests four theoretical propositions about this link. We compare the survival of the French agricultural cooperatives with their competitors. We apply a semiparametric duration model for discrete time (cloglog) taking into account unobserved heterogeneity and isolating the age and the period effects. The study shows the specific temporal dynamics of cooperatives. Some explanations of this result are derived from insights on the competition between organizations.

[paper in French] This paper analyses the meanings, trajectory and perception of nutritional recommendations concerning weight control and dieting, through 85 semi-directive interviews. The article underlines three oppositions concerning the meanings of “diet”: firstly, dieting is closely linked to health (hygiene of life) in the upper strata, whereas in the lower strata health does not often constitute an aim; secondly, dieting is perceived in a preventive perspective and in a broad meaning in the upper strata, whereas in the lower strata it is taken in a curative and narrow meaning (targeting treatment on a short time); thirdly, dieting may constitutes the basis of an experimented knowledge concerning overweight prevention, whereas dieting can remain an applied prescription, when the obsession of losing weight prevents obese people from constituting one’s personal knowledge. Sources of nutritional recommendations are numerous, coming from the medical field and dieting programs, in a context of a strong influence of media. The paper underlines also the importance of opinions leaders. In consequence, social belonging and intensity of social links constitute two main factors helping women to follow a diet, whereas loneliness and breaks in careers are often at the origin of a significant disinvestment in body care.

This paper aims at assessing consumers’ attitudes and willingness to pay for organic beef, an obvious alternative to regular beef in terms of safety, both immediately and at a longer term after the BSE crisis. It is based on two random telephone surveys in an Italian region, the first one conducted in 2001 (few months after the BSE crisis) and the second one in 2003. The analysis is based on an innovative methodology of contingent valuation, keeping into account the possibility for consumers to decide the quantity of their purchase when a price is proposed. The results show that though the effect of the BSE crisis weakened along with time distance, it left some permanent signs in consumers’ behaviour. The main conclusion is that the demand for organic beef reduced, but that in the meantime it became more inelastic.
