Minimizing memory requirement for a multi-rate continuous media server 最小化多速率连续媒体服务器的内存需求

We examine and construct a mathematical model of the buffer sharing problem for a multi-rate continuous media (CM) server, which supports media streams of different bit rates. On the basis of the developed model, we derive the maximal required buffer of a multi-rate CM server with different disk scheduling policies. Based on the observations from some experiments, we learn that not only the data retrieval timing for each stream but also the retrieval sequence of the streams has led to surprising impacts on the maximal buffer requirement of a multi-rate CM server. Therefore, we elaborate a novel disk scheduling scheme to obtain a better retrieval sequence, which can reduce the memory requirement of a multi-rate CM server by using memory sharing. According to the simulation results, the proposed method can reduce the memory buffer by up to 36% of that of the conventional non-sharing scheme, and about 15% of that of the worst case of the conventional buffer-sharing scheme.

Analysis for error code performance of MPEG-2 transport system MPEG-2传输系统误码性能分析

The transmission error code performance of an MPEG-2 transport system is studied, by analyzing the sensitivity of MPEG-2 ES, PES and TS to the transmission error code. The reconstructed images decoded from ES, PES and TS with the transmission error code are used to evaluate the error code performance. On this basis, the threshold of visibility (TOV) of MPEG-2 ES, PES and TS in the form of bit error rate (BER) are studied, compared and analyzed.

Experience in designing a TCP/IP based VOD system over a dedicated network 有在专用网络上设计基于TCP/IP的视频点播系统的经验

We address the problem of designing a TCP/IP based VOD system over a dedicated network. Despite of the general belief that TCP/IP is not suitable for real-time multimedia applications, after testing in a laboratory environment for one year, we are confident in announcing that our prototype is both efficient and reliable. This success depends on several important factors. First of all, the system operates on a dedicated network in which there exists no other traffic except a small amount of background traffic generated by the Ether Switch, the major network component used by our prototype. Second, the system overhead due to the VOD server and the network adaptor card is minimized. Third, we maximize the disk bandwidth by implementing a proprietary disk file system. Our experiment shows that it requires only about 330 KBytes at the client buffer to smooth packet delay jitters.

Cost-effective implementation of ITU-T G.723.1 on a DSP chip 在DSP芯片上高效实现ITU-T G.723.1

This paper presents a full-duplex, real-time implementation of ITU-T G.723.1 speech coder using the SSP1820, Samsung's DSP chip which is based on a 16-bit fixed-point Oak core. Optimization methods are proposed in order to reduce the total cycle time consumed in real-time implementation. The multi-pulse maximum likelihood quantization (MP-MLQ) excitation search block which is the most computation-intensive block in the coder is restructured to reduce the algorithmic redundancy. In addition, efficient filtering methods and memory management are utilized for further optimization. The bit-exact verification with the ITU test vectors and performance evaluation aspects are also discussed in this paper.

The paper describes a low-cost hardware design of a GPS decoder that is compact enough to be installed inside a vehicle. The decoder operates on a portable power supply or car battery and obtains raw tracking data (position/velocity) from a GPS receiver for processing. It can be easily interfaced with a microcomputer to perform specific application such as road mapping using a graphical user interface (GUI) software program.

Sub-picture decoder architecture found 找到了子图像解码器架构

In the digital multimedia, the audio and video decoders usually use a global bus and a traffic controller to transfer data in order to reduce the hardware complexity. We developed an instantaneous sub-picture decoder architecture for the DVD system to reduce the data transfer traffic on the global bus. Using two different FIFOs and a simple state machine controller, the registers in which the contents of commands are stored can be significantly reduced. For continuous display, an easy synchronization is used in the instantaneous sub-picture decoder by comparing to the video presentation time (PTM).
