Longitudinal Associations of Global and Daily Support with Marital Status. 全球和日常支持与婚姻状况的纵向关联

The provision and receipt of emotional support demonstrates benefits for relationships; however, little research has investigated how either global or day-to-day spousal support influences marital stability. This project assessed how global perception of support from a partner and daily provision and receipt of emotional support over 1 week contributed to divorce 10 years later, accounting for demographic covariates. There were no significant associations of support variables with future divorce. Greater education attainment was the only factor significantly associated with decreased risk for divorce. Results suggest that despite potential short-term benefits, global and daily support may not predict long-term marital stability.

Abstract Mental health practitioners (MHPs) need a reliable assessment tool for parental alienation (PA). This study assesses the reliability of the Five-Factor Model (FFM) asserted to test for PA. The FFM contains five criteria; Yes, responses to each of the five criterion is asserted to indicate PA is occurring. Six vignettes were presented to respondents, who provided a response for each of the five criteria. The Intraclass Correlation Coefficient indicated reliability with an average of 0.923 for all vignettes. The Cronbach Alpha values indicate consistency, with an average of 0.926. FFM was determined to be a reliable assessment tool for PA.

Abstract The current study observed the association between personality traits (extraversion, neuroticism, agreeableness) punitiveness, unrelenting standards, self-compassion and overall marital satisfaction among married people in Turkey, India and UK. The study participants who completed the online the Big Five Inventory, Self-Compassion Scale, Young schema questionnaire-short form; Version 3 and Marriage Satisfaction Scale were comprised of 627 volunteer married people between 15 and 82 years old. In the final block of hierarchical analysis, self-compassionate was the most significant predictor of marital satisfaction among Turkish, Indian and British context. The findings strengthen the role of personality, and schemas for mental health professionals working with couples.

Abstract The aim of this study was to identify qualities and resources that help families to adapt to the disclosure of their child’s same-sex sexual orientation. Fifty-four same sex-attracted participants from the Western Cape Province, South Africa represented their families and completed seven self-report questionnaires and responded to an open-ended question. The combined quantitative and qualitative analyses identified several family resilience qualities. Amongst these are community and social support from family, relatives, and friends; positive family communication; ability to redefine a stressor; ability to minimize reactivity; and exposure to same sex-attracted individuals and same-sex attraction as a topic of conversation.

Abstract Minimal research exists exploring how emotional vulnerability relates to client and therapist identities. This study illustrates findings from a preliminary exploration of (a) the vulnerabilities clients experience when receiving feedback from a reflecting team and (b) the intersection between vulnerability, sexual orientation, and racial-ethnic minority identities. Using the concept of a gem, or an exceptionally significant excerpt in Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), couples discussed the discomfort of emotional vulnerability which was exacerbated by the dissimilarity between their racial-ethnic minority and LGBTQIA + identities and the perceived identities of the reflecting team.

Abstract This article reviews and evaluates available research on multicultural training within the field of marriage and family therapy. Four top-tier journals in the field of marriage and family therapy (Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, American Journal of Family Therapy, Contemporary Family Therapy, and Family Process) were used to identify studies on multicultural training. A total of 15 studies met inclusion criteria for review. Following an account of existing trends within the marriage and family therapy multicultural training literature, we provide a critique of the research reviewed and make numerous recommendations for future research in this area.

Abstract The goal of this study was to investigate the relationship between family relational patterns with sexual function (SF) and sexual satisfaction (SS) in married women. The sampling method was multi-stage cluster sampling. Dta collection was done by the Communication Patterns Questionnaire—Short Form (CPQ-SF), Larson Sexual Satisfaction Questionnaire, and Sexual Satisfaction Scale for Women. The results showed a significant positive relationship between the mutual constructive communication patterns (MCC) with the SF. Also, there was a negative and inverse relationship between mutual avoidance communication (MAC) pattern and SF (except for the pain component) and also between the demand-withdrawal communication (DWC) pattern and SF in the stimulation and SS components. Also, there was a negative and inverse relationship between the communication models, except for the MCC model, with women’s SS. In analyzing the multivariate regression analysis (MRA), it was observed that the MCC had the most predictable role of women’s SF.

Abstract Marital adjustment is a crucial factor for the mental and physical health of individuals. In this study, we examined the influence of three factors on marital adjustment, that were, negative affect, neuroticism, and marital commitment. In a sample of 258 married partners (Female n = 138; Mage=35.98, SD = 10.83), we found that negative affect, neuroticism, and marital commitment cumulatively contributed 41% of variance in marital adjustment. Marital commitment contributed the most variance in marital adjustment (33%) versus negative effect and neuroticism combined (9%). The implication, limitations, and future directions are discussed.

Abstract Academic well-being may be an important indicator of mental health for immigrants. The present study examines the relationships between teacher support, parents’ schooling expectations, traumatic events and language proficiency with academic well-being using path analysis. Data were collected from 239 Syrian adolescents. Teacher support and parents’ schooling expectation had a direct effect on academic well-being. Language proficiency affected teacher support. The traumatic event affected school strength and parents’ school expectations. The findings underlined the role of school and family environments in immigrant adolescents’ well-being, particularly teacher support and parents’ schooling expectations.

Abstract The purpose was to investigate the mediating role of interrelational and self-developmental orientations (self-construals) in the relationships between nuclear family emotional functioning and marital satisfaction. Six hundred and eighteen married individuals completed Family Genogram Interview, Balanced Integration Differentiation Scale, Relationship Assessment Scale, and Demographic Information Form. Findings indicated that nuclear family emotional processes and self-construals explained 84% of the variance in marital satisfaction. Emotional contact was the strongest predictor, and the interrelational orientation partially mediated the relationships between emotional contact, symptoms in spouses, and marital satisfaction. Self-developmental orientation fully mediated the relationship between the focus on child and marital satisfaction.
