Actual status, distribution, numbers and threats for four forest bird species – Tengmalm’s Owl (Aegolius funereus), Pygmy Owl (Glaucidium passerinum), Three-toed Woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus), and Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) were studied in the territory of the Pirin National Park, Bulgaria, in the years 2001-2002 and 2019. For the owls, we used night line transect, 2-5 km in length, with acoustic imitation of species calls (henceforth playback) at each 500 (700) m (38 points in 2001-2002, 80 points in 2019). Daytime line transects, 2-5 km in length, were used for counting woodpeckers and Pygmy Owl. In Capercaillie counts, we searched for tracks in the snow, excrements or feathers. GIS analyses were applied for visualization of habitat association and distribution patterns of the studied species. The numbers and distribution of these species were compared between the two study periods and with existing data from previous studies. In 2019 a total of 29 occupied territories of Tengmalm’s Owls, 20 territories of Pygmy Owls, 2 territories of Three-toed Woodpeckers and 16 leks of Capercaillies were found. Decrease in numbers was detected for Tengmalm’s Owl (-30.4%) and Capercaillie. These species showed also different spatial pattern of presence between the two study periods. Threetoed Woodpecker population in Pirin NP is very small, not exceeding 10-15 pairs. Pygmy Owl was recorded for the first time during the breeding period in the National Park. The reasons for the differences between the two study periods were discussed. The results indicate some threats (ski tourism development, disturbance by people, sanitary cuttings, etc.) for these birds and can be used for improving the spatial planning of human activities in Pirin NP.

In 2018, the unique breeding effort of Common Kingfisher was documented in the Danube River system, southwestern Slovakia. Preliminary observations indicated that one breeding pair managed to breed five times of which three attempts were successful. The aim of the present work was to determine whether the observed breeding pair exhibiting remarkable reproductive parameters did not undergo extra-pair interactions or partner exchange during a long breeding season using molecular techniques. Our results show, that male bred not with one, but with two females in sequence during the season. Male found a new mate during the incubation of the third brood. Due to the relatively short distance between nesting burrows and raising many offspring from both broods, we assume that the possibility of simultaneous bigamy is relatively low. Since the females very rarely leave males during breeding, we suggest that exchange of the female partner was due to a loss of the partner rather than a consequence of an abandonment by the female.

This article deals with the first documented and successful breeding of White-tailed Sea-eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) in Turiec and Liptov regions in northern Slovakia. In the Turiec Basin, two different breeding attempts were observed in 2020 and 2021. The two nests of the one pair were located on different trees of the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and in total four eaglets fledged. In the Liptov Basin, one pair bred successfully on a European larch (Larix decidua) in 2021, and brought up one eaglet. All these breeding attempts were successful thanks to regular monitoring of localities, strengthening of unstable nests, guarding against man-induced disturbance and possible tree felling, and by declaration of a protection zone.

Urbanization changes natural environments by transforming the landscape and reducing local biodiversity. However, some urban areas with heterogenous habitats can represent a supplementary breeding environment for non-urban birds. Successful and unusual breeding of Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) and Crested Tit (Lophophanes cristatus) was found in Zvolen city (C Slovakia). Three pairs of Grey Heron bred successfully in trees in the green fragment of abandoned riparian vegetation in the old bed of Slatina river, nearby Zvolen castle in city center in 2020 and 2021. The mean start of breeding was delayed by three weeks in comparison to known data from former Czechoslovakia. Furthermore, breeding of the Crested Tit was documented in the cavity of a panel house insulation. Five chicks fledged on May 10, a little bit earlier than the known fledging period in Central Europe. Position of nests, breeding success and phenology is described and discussed for both species.

The first breeding attempt of the Alpine Swift (Tachymarptis melba) in Slovakia is documented and range and population trend in Europe discussed. Four specimens of the species had appeared during the breeding season 2021 in Michalovce town, SE Slovakia, and a nest with the Alpine Swift eggs was documented on an unaccomplished panel building at a height of 22 m. The Alpine Swifts left the breeding site individually between September 27 and October 18. This breeding may be related to the increase of European population of Alpine Swift.

Occurrence and food composition on migration stopover is described in the regionally extinct breeding bird, the Woodchat Shrike in Slovakia. All vagrant birds in the last 20 years were observed in May in agricultural landscape, similarly to most vagrants of the species observed elsewhere in Central Europe. In the food of the individual bird at the migration stopover in western Slovakia there were found mainly the field crickets (Gryllus campestris; 31%) and carabids of the genus Pterostichus (19%) and beetles (Scarabeidae; 18%). Food composition and history of occurrence of the species in Slovakia and central Europe is discussed.
