. In 2019, the Rarities Committee of the Slovak Ornithological Society/BirdLife Slovakia reviewed 34 records, of which 22 were accepted in the category A and four in category C. Furthermore, seven breeding records were accepted. First record of the Rustic Bunting ( Emberiza rustica ), one record of the Brant Goose ( Branta bernicla ), one record of the Lesser White-fronted Goose ( Anser erythropus ), two records of the Red-breasted Goose ( Branta ruficollis ), one record of the Common Chiffchaff ( Phylloscopus collybita tristis type) and two records of the Yellow-browed Warbler ( Phylloscopus inornatus ) were the most interesting records in 2019. Rarities Committee accepted observations from the year 2019, but also some valuable observations from years 2015 and 2018. For example four records of the Egyptian Goose ( Alopochen aegyptiaca ), two records of the Glossy Ibis ( Plegadis falcinellus ), three breeding records of the Common Merganser ( Mergus merganser ), two breeding records of the Egyptian Goose ( A. aegyptiaca ), some breeding records of the Red-crested Pochard ( Netta rufina ), first breeding record of the Whooper Swan ( Cygnus cygnus ), two records of the Horned Grebe ( Podiceps auritus ), one record of the Pallid Harrier ( Circus macrourus ), one record of the Eurasian Dotterel ( Charadrius morinellus ), one record of the Greater Spotted Eagle ( Clanga clanga ), two records of the European Herring Gull ( Larus argentatus ), one record of the Black-legged Kittiwake ( Rissa tridactyla ), one record of the European Roller ( Coracias garrulus ),one record of the Citrine wagtail ( Motacilla citreola ), one record of Pratincole species ( Glareola sp.) and one record of the Lapland Longspur ( Calcarius lapponicus ).

Hniezdiace spevavce trstín a environmentálne faktory: prípadová štúdia ramena Šrek v alúviu rieky Morava

The relatively untouched character of the floodplain of the Morava River is related to the long-forbidden entry into the Slovak-Austrian border zone designated by this river. Since 1990 the area is reserved for nature protection. A lack of knowledge about breeding bird assemblages from this valuable area is a consequence. Nest monitoring of reed passerines, focusing on the occurrence of the bluethroat (Luscinia svecica cyanecula) was performed in April–July 2018 and 2020 in the riparian vegetation of a selected section of the Šrek oxbow. Relation of habitat and weather factors were studied in six recorded reed passerine species Acrocephalus schoenobaenus, A. arundinaceus, A. scirpaceus, Emberiza schoeniclus, Locustella luscinioides and Luscinia svecica cyanecula. For the target criteria species the bluethroat, nesting was also proven in 2020, with estimated density of 4. 7 breeding pairs /10 ha. Significant affinity for the open water was documented in A. arundinaceus, when the bluethroat preferred the points with broadleaved riparian banks.

O výskyte a hniezdení húsky štíhlej (Alopochen aegyptiaca) na Slovensku

Since the first occurrence of the Egyptian Goose (Alopochen aegyptiaca) in Slovakia in 1993, a significant increase in its abundance has been recorded, until end of 2019 as many as 103 observation records were found, from year 2007 several new records appear almost annually. The first breeding was confirmed in 2014, next two cases in 2015 and 2017. In 2019, the fourth breeding was documented in the city of Bratislava – at the Kuchajda lake, with recorded agonistic behaviour against Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos). Further spread of the Egyptian Goose, considered an invasive species in the EU, is envisaged also in Slovakia. Possible negative influence of the species on autochthonous avifauna is discussed.

K hniezdnej denzite a neobvyklému hniezdnemu správaniu Certhia brachydactyla na západnom Slovensku

Breeding and breeding density was studied in the Short-toed Treecreeper (Certhia brachydactyla) in two sites (riparian forest and park habitat) in Western Slovakia in 2015–2020. The breeding density was 3–5 nests (mean 4.2, i.e. 2.63 nests/10 ha, the highest 3.13/10 ha in 2018 and 2020) in riparian forest (16 ha study plot, near Piešťany town), using the nest mapping method, and 3–4 males (mean 3.2, i.e. 4.4 males/10 ha) in old park in Nitra town (7.2 ha), using the territories mapping method. The nests were built in trees 1–7.2 m high (mean 2.5 m, n = 32) in riparian forest and they were located mostly in poplar (15) and willow (4). Two nests were found only seven meters each of other and three adult individuals were feeding the young in these two nests. Hence, probably two females fed own young and one male fed young in both nests during two days before their fledging (April 25 and 26, 2020).

Hniezdne spoločenstvá vtákov vo vzťahu k štruktúre urbánneho prostredia malého mesta (Sabinov, východné Slovensko)

In the present study, we explored the effects of urban habitat attributes on richness, density and community composition of breeding birds. We performed the study during breeding season within a small town (c. 12,000 inhabitants) in eastern Slovakia in 2019. We assessed bird data and habitat characteristics for seven zones (town centre, an old detached houses’ residential area, a recent detached houses’ residential area, industrial zone, a high-rise buildings’ residential area, greenway) within the study area (347 ha). We found 40 breeding species and 2,033 breeding pairs within the area. The bird species were classified into six nesting guilds (building-nesters, hole-nesters, tree-crown-nesters, shrub-nesters, ground-nesters, and riparian cavity-nesters) and to four groups with different affinity to urban environment. The building-nesters were the most abundant guild followed by treecrown-nesters. We found that maximum tree height and ruderal vegetation cover correlated positively with overall species richness, and maximum number of buildings’ floors correlated positively with overall abundance (per 10 ha). Abundance of hole-nesters, tree-crown-nesters and shrub-nesters correlated positively with tree cover, and negatively with cover of hard surfaces; building-nesters’ abundance was positively correlated with maximum number of buildings’ floors. Tree cover and maximum number of buildings’ floors explained 50.7% of species composition in zones. Composition of nesting guilds differed between the town zones. Our results indicate the importance of urban vegetation to maintain higher breeding bird species richness in town environment.

We performed the study during breeding season within a small town (c. 12,000 inhabitants) in eastern Slovakia in 2019. We assessed bird data and habitat characteristics for seven zones (town centre, an old detached houses’ residential area, a recent detached houses’ residential area, industrial zone, a high-rise buildings’ residential area, greenway) within the study area (347 ha). We found 40 breeding species and 2,033 breeding pairs within the area. The bird species were classified into six nesting guilds (building-nesters, hole-nesters, tree-crown-nesters, shrub-nesters, ground-nesters, and riparian cavity-nesters) and to four groups with different affinity to urban environment. The building-nesters were the most abundant guild followed by treecrown-nesters. We found that maximum tree height and ruderal vegetation cover correlated positively with overall species richness, and maximum number of buildings’ floors correlated positively with overall abundance (per 10 ha). Abundance of hole-nesters, tree-crown-nesters and shrub-nesters correlated positively with tree cover, and negatively with cover of hard surfaces; building-nesters’ abundance was positively correlated with maximum number of buildings’ floors. Tree cover and maximum number of buildings’ floors explained 50.7% of species composition in zones. Composition of nesting guilds differed between the town zones. Extreme breeding effort of Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) 翠鸟的极端繁殖努力(Alcedo atthis)

The Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) has a fairly long breeding season in Central Europe. Birds start to breed at the end of March and finish early in September. In this time they can successfully breed two, three or four times per season. The study of kingfisher breeding biology in Danube river system (southwestern Slovakia) brought interesting discovery. In 2018, we documented the extremely long breeding period of an individual breeding pair of Kingfisher at the locality of Fodráska, where the first egg was laid on March 30, while the last young were expected to leave the nest on September 30, 2018. The pair attempted to breed five times, of which three attempts were successful with totally 19 raised chicks. The length of breeding season was estimated on around 185 days. This is one of the longest documented breeding seasons in this species and the latest date of breeding observed in the Central Europe.
