Backstepping approach based on Lyapunov theorem is perfectly fit for PMSM control. In this paper, backstepping control theory is applied to design a speed controller to control the speed of PMSM. Considering parameters uncertainty, a further adaptive backstepping controller is designed. Additionally, chaos as an actual existence of PMSM, based on adaptive backstepping, is simulated in paper. The simulation results show that the backstepping controller can reduce the overshoot and greatly shorten the time to stabilize. Moreover, the results show that the adaptive backstepping controller cannot only ensure the stability of the system, but also effectively restrain the harmful effects on speed control system.
