GDR architecture and town planning in post-unification Germany: ‘Geschichtsaufarbeitung’ or aesthetic autonomy?

“Von meinem Ubergangsburo im ehemaligen Staatsratsgebaude mus ich immer auf den Palast der Republik gucken. Der ist so monstros, das ich da lieber ein Schlos hatte. [...] Den Befurwortern (des Schlosses) wird ja unterstellt, sie wollten – weil dann der Palast der Republik wegkame – damit gleichsam die Geschichte der DDR eliminieren. Das steht fur mich uberhaupt nicht im Vordergrund. Wenn der nicht so haslich und voller Asbest ware, konnte der meinetwegen stehenbleiben.” These comments by Gerhard Schroder about the ‘Palast der Republik’ encapsulate much of the substance of the debate about GDR architecture in the 10 years since the ‘Wende’. Schroder's carefully chosen words illustrate his desire to move the debate about the retention or demolition of the ‘Palast der Republik’ away from the symbolic level of ideology, the triumph of one system over another and the elimination of the history of the GDR, to that of pure aesthetics: his personal architectural preferences for a historical building rather than the modernist ‘Palast’.
