While previous chapters established the importance of various levels of news agencies and the exchange agreements among them in global news flow, this chapter addresses the following research question: are news agencies, particularly those serving print-based media such as newspapers, becoming redundant in a ‘globalizing’ world? It also addresses: “What is news?” and “Who decides what news should be selected?” The chapter further elaborates on the news exchange relationships among agencies and explains how agencies operate within a global news network.
