Advantages of belt drives include minimal maintenance and lubrication requirements, smoothing of sudden shock loads, and quietness. In general, belting systems are less expensive than most other power transmission systems, and offer the flexibility to vary the speed of the driven load without altering the driver speed by simply replacing the sheave(s).
