Clipping-Free Dynamic Range: the Fundamental Limit for Class-B Microwave-Photonic Links
The ultimate dynamic range of a Class-B microwave-photonic link (MPL) with an ideally-linear input-output transfer function is limited by signal-clipping. This clipping-free dynamic range (CFDR) is derived for a signal band with a Gaussian amplitude probability density function. Considering the fraction of total clipping-induced distortion power falling into the signal band, the CFDR is found to be substantially (e.g. 70 dB) larger than spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of conventional Class-A links. This result shows the potential for substantial improvement in link performance through the use of Class-B techniques
