Do spatial practices legitimize the values promoted by organizations? An ethno-architectural survey of governance and sustainable development in coworking spaces
ABSTRACTCompared to traditional organizations, a coworking organization needs to be clearly distinguished, recognized and identified in its environment. The question of legitimacy is therefore relevant for coworking spaces. We investigate their spatial practices through Lefebvre’s spatial triad, and how they affect their organizational legitimacy, in order to establish whether these practices support the values promoted by coworking organizations. Based on an ethno-architectural survey, interviews and an analysis of their websites, we focus on two main values promoted by the collaborative spaces we investigated: alternative modes of governance and sustainability. We found that their spatial practices did not fully align with these values. We introduce the concept of spatial legitimacy, and our ethno-architectural survey contributes in methodological terms to the analysis of spatial practices in the field of organizational studies.KEYWORDS: Spatial practicesSpatial legitimacyCoworking spacesEthno-architectural survey Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Notes1 https://wiki.coworking.org/w/page/67817489/The%20Values%20of%20Open%20Coworking (July 2021).2 https://lesgrandsvoisins.org/les-grands-voisins/gouvernance/ [viewed on November 15, 2020].3 http://91.121.3.209/altercartonew/site0/index0.html#art_PR-Adhesion [viewed on November 15, 2020].4 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PechaKucha5 https://thecamp.fr/fr/a-propos [viewed on November 9, 2020].6 https://woma.fr/lassociation/le-projet-woma/ [viewed on November 9, 2020].7 https://lesgrandsvoisins.org/la-vie-du-site-2/eco-responsabilite/ [viewed on November 15, 2020].8 http://91.121.3.209/altercartonew/site0/index0.html#art_PR-Que%20fait%20altercarto [viewed on November 15, 2020].9 https://www.ledonut-marseille.com/notre-approche [viewed on November 15, 2020].10 https://thecamp.fr/fr/document/rapport-developpement-durable-2018, p. 17. Culture and Organization was founded in 1995 as Studies in Cultures, Organizations and Societies . It represents the intersection of academic disciplines that have developed distinct qualitative, empirical and theoretical vocabularies to research organization, culture and related social phenomena. Culture and Organization features refereed articles that offer innovative insights and provoke discussion. It particularly offers papers which employ ethnographic, critical and interpretive approaches, as practised in such disciplines as organizational, communication, media and cultural studies, which go beyond description and use data to advance theoretical reflection. The Journal also presents papers which advance our conceptual understanding of organizational phenomena.
