The interactions with Mg<sup>2+</sup> and Ca<sup>2+</sup> were studied in NaCl<sub>(aq)</sub> (0.10 ≤ <em>I</em>/ mol kg<sup>−1</sup> (H<sub>2</sub>O) ≤ 1.02) and <em>T</em> = 298.15 K. Two different speciation models were obtained; Ca<sup>2+</sup>: CaH<sub>2</sub>L, CaHL, CaL. Mg<sup>2+</sup>: MgH<sub>3</sub>L, MgH<sub>2</sub>L, MgHL, MgL. The dependence of the thermodynamic parameters on the ionic strength and temperature was modelled by means of the Specific Ion Interaction Theory (SIT) and a modified Debye-Hückel equation including a term for the dependence on <em>T</em>/K. The first two protonation equilibria are exothermic, and the reactions are not favoured by an increase of the temperature whilst the last two are endothermic. The entropic contribution resulted to be the driving force of the reactions. The sequestering ability of alendronate towards the two metal cations was quantified by means of the pL<sub>0.5</sub> parameter calculated at different pHs and ionic strengths. It resulted that alendronate has a higher sequestration toward Mg<sup>2+</sup> with respect to Ca<sup>2+</sup>. Studies on systems with variability, such as biological or bio-based materials, gas hydrates, among others, will also be considered provided these are well characterized and reproducible where possible. Experimental methods should be described in sufficient detail to allow critical assessment of the accuracy claimed. Authors are encouraged to provide physical or chemical interpretations of the results. Articles can contain modelling sections providing representations of data or molecular insights into the properties or transformations studied. Theoretical papers on chemical thermodynamics using molecular theory or modelling are also considered. The Journal welcomes review articles in the field of chemical thermodynamics but prospective authors should first consult one of the Editors concerning the suitability of the proposed review. Contributions of a routine nature or reporting on uncharacterised materials are not accepted.
