Collalto was an aristocrat who participated in the Order of Malta’s mission to Bulgaria during the First World War and encountered Queen Eleonora, her childhood acquaintance. To comprehend the information about Eleonora provided in the memoir, the history of Bulgaria, Ferdinand I, the familial background of Maria Therese Collalto, and the life of the Queen herself are briefly summarised.
