Evaluation of Vitamin D Levels in Kütahya Province: A Hospital-Based Retrospective Study
Introduction: The general health status and quality of life of people are adversely affected by the symptoms that occur due to vitamin D deficiency, which is a steroid vitamin that is synthesized in the skin by 90-95% under the influence of sunlight. The aim of the study is to evaluate the vitamin D status of outpatients admitted to Kütahya Health Sciences University Evliya Çelebi Training and Research Hospital between 2017-2021 according to age, gender and season. Material and Methods: Those whose 25-Hydroxy Vitamin D (25-OH VitD) levels were studied were retrospectively analyzed from the hospital database system. 121727 patients were included in the study. Factors affecting vitamin D deficiency were determined by logistic regression method and risk assessments were made between categories. Results: The mean and standard deviation values of 25-OH VitD levels were 16.73±11.11 ng/ml. When 20 ng/ml is taken as the cut-off value; 71.5% of the patients had vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D levels were found to be lower especially in the winter season, in women, and with increasing age. Conclusion: It has been shown that vitamin D deficiency is common in patients admitted to the hospital in Kütahya. We think that benefiting more from sunlight in the spring and summer seasons, and dietary and lifestyle changes will positively affect the vitamin D level.
