Octanoic acid (OA) plays a vital role in combating sepsis and has a protective effect on both animal models and human patients. In this discussion, the potential protective mechanisms of OA in sepsis, focusing on its regulation of the inflammatory response, immune system, oxidative stress, gastrointestinal microbiome and barrier function, metabolic disorders and malnutrition, as well as organ dysfunction are explored.
