Mechanical injury to the periradicular tissues can cause activation of several pathways of inflammation and release of nonspecific mediators. Continuous irritation of periradicular tissues can cause activation of several pathways of inflammation and release of nonspecific mediators. Continuous egress of antigens from a pathologically involved root canal can also result in one or a combination of the various types of immunologic reactions. A number of these reactions participate in the destruction of periradicular tissues.
