Adultos mayores LGB en Puerto Rico: sujetos sin expiración
The issue of adulthood acquires relevance in times of projection of the phenomenon of the demographic imperative (Hooyman, 2006) of populations in this stage of life. In particular, studies conducted in Puerto Rico and other countries show an invisible situation of lesbian, gay, bisexuals, transexual and transgender people (LGBTT), particularly in the stage of development of older adulthood. This article is the result of a mixed methods research conducted in Puerto Rico with lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) older adults 60 years of age or older. We explore the variables of quality of life, health, moods, social support, internalized homophobia and needs. From the qualitative method we explore the categories of human rights, experiences in adulthood, needs and social support. The surveys involved 61 people, 31 men, 30 women; 25 gay, 23 lesbian and 13 bisexual persons, with an average of 64 years; six people, three men and three women participated in the interviews. This research had a multidisciplinary approach: social work and psychology, and with institutional support of FIPI funds from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus.
