The fact that author names are preferred as a search option in access to information reveals the necessity of author authority directories. Author authority directories are seen as a must at the point of controlling the library collection. In this regard, the necessity of author authority indexes, their importance in terms of bibliographic control and the problems encountered while creating an authority index are discussed in the study. Within the scope of the research, 8980 sources of information in the catalog of Ankara University Library selected as a sample were examined. At the same time, existing printed sources, databases and electronic resources were examined in order to determine the different names and pseudonyms of the authors. In addition, the authority records of Turkish authors on the VIAF were compared with the records of Ankara University Library, and author input consistency and errors were determined. It was emphasized which rules and principles should be taken into account when preparing an author authority index under the guidance of VIAF and RDA.
