In the United States, liver transplantation has historically been focused on deceased donor organs, and tumor burden is used for risk-stratifying patients on the transplant waitlist. Living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) is gaining popularity in the United States and has long been practiced in Asian countries. To improve outcomes of overall survival and disease-free survival post-living donor liver transplantation, surrogates of tumor biology are now being regarded to be as important as tumor burden.
